Thereisnoprecedentfortherapidsubstantialchangeweneedtomake。Buildinganenvironmentallysustainablefuturedependsonrestructuringtheglobaleconomy,majorshiftsinhumanreproductivebehavior,anddramaticchangesinvaluesandlifestyles。Doingallthisquicklyaddsuptoarevolutionthatisdrivenanddefinedbytheneedtorestoretheearth‘senvironmentalsystems。IfthisEnvironmentalRevolutionsucceeds,itwillrankwiththeAgriculturalandIndustrialRevolutionsasoneofthegreateconomicandsocialtransformationsinhumanhistory。
LiketheAgriculturalRevolution,itwilldramaticallyalterpopulationtrends。Whiletheformersetthestageforenormousincreasesinhumannumbers,thisrevolutionwillsucceedonlyifitstabilizeshumanpopulationsize,reestablishingabalancebetweenpeopleandnaturalsystemonwhichtheydepend。IncontrasttotheIndustrialRevolution,whichwasbasedonashifttofossilfuels,thisnewtransformationwillbebasedonashiftawayfromfossilfuels。
