Chinahasbeenthroughawrenchingseriesofchangesandexperiments。Itisnotforme，orforothersinAmerica，totellChinawhatitseconomicsystemshouldbe。WhatworksbestforChinawillbeasystemrootedinChinaitself－inChinesecustomsandtraditionsandwaysofdoingthings。Theproofofanysystemliesinitsresults：intheextenttowhichitprovidesforthepeoplemoreofwhatthosepeoplewant。WhatthepeopleofChinawantwillnotbeinallrespectsthesameaswhatthepeopleoftheUnitedStateswouldwant。Butinsomerespectsitwillbethesame。Thebottomlinestestofanyeconomicsystemiswhetheritworks。Aneconomicsystemthatworksisonethatcreatesincentivestoproduce，andprovidesafairdistributionofwhatisproduced。Whatincentiveswillwork，whatdistributionisseentobe“fair”－－－thesearequestionsthatdifferentculturesmayanswerdifferently，andthateventhesameculturemayanswerdifferentlyindifferentperiodsofhistoryoratdifferentstagesofitsdevelopment。

Amongthegreatnations，theUnitedStates’economicsystemisthemostsuccessfulinhistoryinproducingprosperity。TheChinesesystemisthemostsuccessfulinhistoryinproducingequality。Thechallengewebothfaceistoavoidforcingpeopletomakeahardchoicebetweenasystematoneextremewhichprovidesequalitybutwouldperpetuatepovertyandoneattheotherextremewhichprovidesprosperitybutwouldignorepoverty。Povertyistoohighapricetopayforeitherequalityorprosperity。China’schallengeistosupporttheprincipleofequalitywithoutdestroyingtheproductivityofthepeople。America’schallengeistoprovideprosperitywhichgivesallanopportunitytoescapefrompoverty。Oursystemsareprofoundlydifferent，butinlongviewourgoalofabetterlifeforallourpeopleisthesame。
