Thosehigheruponthesocialladderarenolessanxious。Theirlivesarenolessemptythanthoseoftheirsubordinates。Theyareevenmoreinsecureinsomerespects。Theyareinahighlycompetitiverace。Tobepromotedortofallbehindisnotamatterofsalarybutevenmoreamatterofself-respect。Whentheyapplyfortheirfirstjob,theyaretestedforintelligenceaswellasforthetightmixtureofsubmissivenessandindependence。Fromthatmomentontheyaretestedagainandagain-bythepsychologists,forwhomtestingisabigbusiness,andbytheirsuperiors,whojudgetheirbehavior,sociability,capacitytogetalong,etc。Thisconstantneedtoprovethatoneisasgoodasorbetterthanone’sfellow-competitorcreatesconstantanxietyandstress,theverycausesofunhappinessandillness。

Thatexperiencesinfluencesubsequentbehaviourisevidenceofanobviousbutneverthelessremarkableactivitycalledremembering。Learningcouldnotoccurwithoutthefunctionpopularlynamedmemory。Constantpracticehassuchaseffectonmemoryastoleadtoskillfulperformanceonthepiano,torecitationofapoem,andeventoreadingandunderstandingthesewords。So-calledintelligentbehaviourdemandsmemory,rememberingbeingaprimaryrequirementforreasoning。Theabilitytosolveanyproblemoreventorecognizethataproblemexistsdependsonmemory。Typically,thedecisiontocrossastreetisbasedonrememberingmanyearlierexperiences。
